Louisiana governor is re-elected chair of Southern Regional Education Board

NEW ORLEANS - Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Blanco was re-elected chair the Southern Regional Education Board at the organization's annual meeting here recently.

Blanco became governor in 2004; as governor, she is a member of the Southern Regional Education Board. A former high school teacher, she served two terms as Louisiana's lieutenant governor. She has also served Louisiana as a legislator and as an elected member and chair of the Public Service Commission. She was first elected chair of SREB at the 2004 Annual Meeting, making her the first Louisiana governor to chair the Board.

Paul Stanton Jr., president of East Tennessee State University, was re-elected vice chairman of SREB. Dr. Stanton was dean of medicine/vice president for health affairs at East Tennessee State University before being named president in 1997. He was appointed by the governor of Tennessee to the Southern Regional Education Board the same year.

South Carolina Rep. Ronald Townsend, who has been on the SREB Board since 1996, was re-elected treasurer of the board. He also serves as a member of the SREB Legislative Advisory Council.

The Southern Regional Education Board, America's first interstate compact for education, is headquartered in Atlanta. It has 16 member states: Alabama, Arkansas, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and West Virginia.
