Promising and alarming messages from the 2005 SREB Fact Book on Higher Education
The biennial
SREB Fact Book on Higher Education
has both promising and alarming messages. The Fact Book says:
SREB states will lead the nation in population growth in the next 20 years,
but gaps in education attainment among the fastest-growing racial/ethnic groups
- Hispanic and black populations - are a growing challenge.
College enrollment trends are both promising and alarming. More high school
graduates, more women and more minorities are attending colleges and
universities, but enrollment continues to lag for Hispanics.
College degrees and certificates are still the ticket to higher earnings in
America. Those with bachelor's degrees earned 77 percent more than those with
high school credentials in 2003.
The costs of college are now a bigger challenge for middle- and lower-income
students. Rising costs have created an affordability gap for many families.
The data and individual reports on each SREB state are
online.
