SREB Brings State Educational Technology Leaders Together for Annual Summit

State leaders and policy-makers from the 16 Southern Regional Education Board states will converge this week to hear from national experts and share details of their work on virtual schools, digital content for students and teachers, and more.

The 13th annual meeting of the SREB Educational Technology Cooperative will be held at the Don CeSar Hotel in St. Pete Beach, Florida, beginning at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, September 5, and concluding with lunch on Friday, September 7.

Speakers and panelists will include SREB President Dave Spence, SREB educational technology directors Bill Thomas and Bruce Chaloux, and many others.

Experts Gerard L. Hanley of the California State University system, Richard Baraniuk of Rice University and others will discuss digital learning content — such as interactive diagrams, video and audio presentations, and other resources that K-12 and higher education teachers increasingly will be able to use. The SREB-SCORE initiative will allow states to share such content and to ensure that it meets high standards.

Don Spicer of the University of Maryland, Kevin Lemoine of the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board and Frank Prochaska of the University of North Carolina will discuss state initiatives to use technology to redesign college courses.

June Weis of SREB and Bill Tucker of the nonpartisan policy organization Education Sector will discuss the new SREB Report on State Virtual Schools (available at www.sreb.org), state progress on creating and expanding state virtual schools (nearly all SREB states now have them or soon will) and the policy ramifications of virtual schooling.

Other presentations will feature educational technology officials from Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, North Carolina, Oklahoma and West Virginia.
