SREB Selects Virginia's High-Quality Online Teacher

RICHMOND — Sarah Warnick of Glen Allen, Virginia, will be recognized tomorrow, April 30, as Virginia’s outstanding High-Quality Online Teacher for 2008-2009 by the Southern Regional Education Board (SREB).

A language teacher with the Virtual Virginia School, Warnick will receive a certificate of commendation from Mark E. Emblidge, president of the State Board of Education and affiliate professor and director of The Literacy Institute at Virginia Commonwealth University, at the Virginia Department of Education State Board of Education Meeting. Cathy Cheely, director of Virtual Virginia, also will attend.

Warnick is in her second year of virtual instruction and teaches Advanced Placement (AP) Spanish language, Spanish IV, and survey of world languages and cultures – Spanish. She has served as a mentor to new teachers and as an online content developer. Virtual Virginia nominated Warnick because she has been an early adopter of new online tools and has been active in conducting staff workshops. She is known for her positive attitude and outreach efforts to students and schools.

"SREB created this first-of-its-kind award to recognize the key role of the online teacher in providing top-quality instruction to students across Virginia," said Myk Garn, the director of SREB’s Educational Technology Cooperative. The Cooperative works with Virginia and SREB’s other member states to give students online access to the academic courses they need, regardless of where they live.

In total, 13 online teachers in the SREB region are receiving the award.
