Despite Economy, Thousands of Educators to Gather in Atlanta for One of Nation's Largest School Improvement Conferences

ATLANTA – Nearly 7,500 educators from across the nation and beyond will gather here July 8-11 at the Georgia World Congress Center for the Southern Regional Education Board’s 23rd Annual High Schools That Work Summer Staff Development Conference.

The event is organized by SREB’s highly regarded High Schools That Work (HSTW) school improvement program — which provides training, materials and support for about 1,600 schools in 31 states, the District of Columbia and Calgary, Canada.

"This remarkable event brings teachers, principals and school district leaders together each year with national experts and their peers to share ideas for improving teaching and learning in the middle grades and high schools," SREB President Dave Spence said.

"Even with the economic slowdown, thousands of educators are showing their commitment to improving student achievement and graduation rates by attending this year’s conference. State and district-level leaders continue to support this conference because of its value in improving education and maximizing schools’ resources," said SREB Senior Vice President Gene Bottoms, the founder of HSTW and a nationally known expert and advocate for better schools.

The conference begins at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, July 8, with an opening session that will include awards for schools from across the nation that have shown major improvements or high schools on the HSTW and Making Middle Grades Work Assessments, which are aligned with the National Assessment of Educational Progress.
